Like Old Times

Over the weekend, I made the trip to Orlando to visit some old friends from college. It was so weird to be back around campus and not having to worry about studying and midterms. I guess it’s actually a liberating feeling to be done with all that.

But while I was there, I really wanted to relive the old days, just none of that studying nonsense.

These guys were one of the first friends I made in my freshman year. We lived on the same floor of our dorm building and were roommates during my last year. We hung out throughout college; long nights studying (or playing video games, one of those), wrestling each other out of the dorm, pulling pranks, you know… just doing stupid things college kids do.

But going back and trying to plan things to do to relive the old days just wasn't working. “It’s not like the old days anymore” one of them told me. It dawned on me. It shouldn't have surprised me, but it did. We are growing up. We have responsibilities to other people, organizations and work.  It wasn't like it was back when we had nothing to care about and no one to worry about, but ourselves and enjoying college life.

Our friendship hasn't changed in any way, but our priorities have. Looking back now, we really have come a long way from when we first met. I can tell this road to growing up will have lots of surprises and changes and “a-ha” moments. But I’m just glad to know our friendship will be one thing that stays constant.
